Semmering 2023 - Südbahnhotel Semmering
Here is my picture of the beautiful Südbahnhotel, Semmering, which I took last October. It shows the beautiful hotel with the characteristic deep green roof, surrounded by autumnal trees and forests, and mountains in the background. I also really like the colors, accentuated by the light of the setting sun.
The original hotel was built in 1882 as the first hotel on the Semmering. It was one of several grand hotels on the southern railway line from Vienna to Trieste with the aim of revitalising the regions along this route for tourism. Semmering was easy to reach thanks to the Semmering Railway and quickly became a popular holiday and climatic health resort. It was particularly popular with Viennese society, but also attracted guests from all over the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After numerous renovations, extensions and a period of military hospitalisation and Russian occupation during and after the Second World War, the hotel was finally closed in 1976. Nowadays, the building is mainly used as a venue for various events, particularly cultural and artistic events.¹ Guided tours of the hotel are also offered all year round, depending on the availability of guides.²
