USA 2023 #4 - Crater Lake at sunset

03/05/2024

Here's another picture from my trip to the USA in summer 2023, again showing the impressive Crater Lake in Oregon. I particularly like the small island in the lake and the beautiful sunset mood. The picture is also framed in a really nice U-shape by the trees and draws the eye to the small island. I experimented a lot with the editing and put the picture away for two months before I tried again. This is the result. I added some haze to make the image look a bit dreamier and used a linear gradient mask to enhance the intensity and colour warmth of the sunset. The picture itself was actually taken in a bit of a hurry, as my parents were already waiting for me in the campervan. It took me a little longer because a nice older guy asked me what exactly I was photographing and we had a quick chat.

With a depth of 593 m, Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the USA and the seventh deepest in the world. It forms the centrepiece of the only national park in Oregon and was formed about 7700 years ago by the volcano "Mount Mazama", which collapsed during an eruption. The entire park covers an area of 741 km² and is open all year round. In winter and spring, however, some roads and utilities are closed due to snowfall.¹
